Heather McKissick, Senior Vice President Community Impact at University Federal Credit Union, presented her talk “Move Forward: Give Back – Advancing Career and Community through Service” at IncubatorCTX on Thursday, October 10th to a packed room of students, faculty, staff, entrepreneurs, and members of the business community.
In her talk, McKissick discussed how to fully give back to the community while expanding professionally and personally. She has always been attracted to the not-for-profit sectors because she “loves rolling up her sleeves and giving back to the community”.
Here in Austin, TX, it is possible to have a progressive, lucrative, fulfilling, growth-oriented career in the not-for-profit sector. McKissick’s experience either in the for-profit or not-for-profit sector has directly influenced her career when it comes to her own growth, skills, development. She has brought the knowledge gained from these experiences back to the organizations where she works.
McKissick encouraged our guests to follow these 5 steps/tips:
- Clarify Your Cause
- Drive Your Development Plan
- Ask For Help
- Leapfrog the Ladder
- Mutual Gain
Heather’s message is when you engage in the not-for-profit world, find a cause you believe in, and find out how you can leverage that cause to develop yourself, you also contribute to your organization. Giving Back while moving forward can be one of the most powerful career builders that you can find.
